A warm and slightly fruity twist on the classic Old Fashioned, where mandarin replaces the traditional orange. A bourbon with notes of vanilla and caramel pairs particularly well with the sweetness of the mandarin, while cinnamon and aromatic bitters add a spicy and complex touch.
Ingredients
- American bourbon with notes of vanilla, caramel, and spices
- maple syrup
- drops of Angostura bitters
- ground cinnamon
- grated tangerine zest
- tangerine slice
- large ice cube
Instructions
- Place the maple syrup, bitters, and cinnamon in an Old Fashioned glass.
- Add the bourbon and stir well to mix.
- Add a large ice cube and stir for 15 to 20 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the cocktail.
- Gently press the tangerine slice over the glass to add a few drops of juice.
- Express the oils from the tangerine zest over the cocktail, then place the zest in the glass.
- Prefer a bourbon with 40 to 50% alcohol content, notes of vanilla, caramel, oak, and spices rather than a heavily peated whisky.
- For a spicier character, replace the pinch of cinnamon with a very light pinch of freshly grated nutmeg.
- A large ice cube melts more slowly and prevents the cocktail from diluting too quickly.
- No common priority allergens; however, check the labels of the whisky and bitters used.
- Serve immediately.
- Old Fashioned glass, jigger, bar spoon, peeler or knife
- Serve on a large ice cube with a wide orange zest and, optionally, a small cinnamon stick.
- For a drier and spicier version, use rye whiskey instead of bourbon.
- For a fruitier version, add 5 ml of freshly squeezed tangerine juice.
- For a more festive version, garnish with a small cinnamon stick.
